In the 1986-87 season, Sporting Gijón achieved what is still their biggest ever away win the La Liga, and it was 4-0 away to Barça. That was some night for the Asturians, but the red and whites are far more used to receiving rather than inflicting heavy defeats at the Camp Nou. Sporting are one of the historic teams in Spain, and one of just nine clubs never to have been relegated any lower than the top two divisions. But in 1998, a twenty year run in the top flight came to an end for Sporting, but a decade later they were back – and their third game was a rude awakening when they were thumped 6-1 at home to Barça.

The mighty Barça at home to one of the traditionally most dangerous underdogs in the Spanish championship, and who have a habit of springing surprises, including a famous 3-2 win at the Camp Nou in 2008 that spelt the end the road for doomed Barça manager Frank Rijkaard. Although Mallorca are the number one side in the Balearics, the cultural ties with Catalunya mean there are plenty of Barça sympathisers on the islands as well. And FC Barcelona have played a prominent role in Mallorca’s history.

After the big two of Barça and Real Madrid, Valencia has the biggest support in Spanish football, and is the only other club to have won more than five European trophies. A massive rivalry has developed between Barça and the ‘Che’, as the 2002 and 2004 Liga champions are popularly known, which has only been strengthened by a series of historic encounters in recent years. These have included Rivaldo’s incredible last-day hat-trick in 2001, Valencia’s amazing comeback from 3-0 down in the 1997 Copa del Rey, and perhaps the most famous meeting of all between the two sides - Valencia’s 5-3 aggregate win in the Champions League semi finals of 1999-2000.

After winning the Spanish Cup in 1948, it would be another 60 years before Sevilla won another major trophy, but then the silverware started arriving thick and fast. Back to back UEFA Cups in 2006 and 2007, the Copa del Rey in 2007 and also the European Super Cup in 2006, when they demolished Barça 3-0. After so many years as also-rans, Sevilla are back where they belong at the top table of Spanish football.

FC Barcelona were celebrating their 16th Spanish championship in 1999, at the same time that little Villarreal won promotion to the top flight for the first time in their history. Few expected much from the Yellow Submarine, but they have enjoyed surprise success, reaching the Champions League semi finals in 2006 and finishing second in La Liga in the 2007-08 season. From a small town of just 49,000 people located just down the Mediterranean coast from Barcelona, they always bring considerable away support to add to the atmosphere at the Camp Nou.

There was rivalry between Barcelona and Madrid long before there was football in Spain, and the clásico is just a continuation of the contention between Catalonia and the capital of Spain. When the two giants of Spanish football meet, it’s quite simply one of the biggest football matches in the world. It’s a game drenched in history, when Catalan separatism comes head to head with Spanish centralism, which reached its height when Madrid were associated with a Franco dictatorship, and the Camp Nou was the only place that Catalans, through Barça, could voice their discontent. Franco may have gone, but the fierce rivalry remains.

Andalusian side Málaga are in town to take on the might of FC Barcelona, and it would take a brave man to bet on the visiting team’s chances here. The last day of the 1971/1972 season did see the blue and whites collect a famous 1-0 win at the Camp Nou, the same year they finished a record seventh in the Liga table, but they have usually been on the receiving end of some serious wallopings. Málaga have had their moments though, and one day they will never forget was their 5-1 drubbing of Barça in 2003. But they were playing at home that day, trips to Catalunya have rarely come anywhere close to those heroics, and they are usually happy just to try and sneak away with a draw.

Racing Santander were one of the ten founder members of La Liga in 1928, and finished second in 1930. Things bode well for the north coast club, but the potential was not realised. They have spent as much time in the lower divisions as the first, and although they were the first side to ever represent Spain abroad, at a 1930 tournament in Paris, it was not until 2007 that they made their first appearance in an official European tournament – the UEFA Cup.

Things don’t come much more historic than FC Barcelona against Athletic Club Bilbao. These are two of just three teams that have never been relegated from the top tier of Spanish football and between them have 47 cup and 27 league titles. And there’s a special bond between the two sides, for if Barça are the symbols of the Catalan separatist identity, then if anything Bilbao are even more so for the Basque Country. But while Barça proudly display their plethora of European, African and Latin American superstars, the ‘Lions’, even in this international day and age, still insist on only using players born or raised in the Basque Country.

Barcelona v Getafe will always bring back memories of their famous Copa del Rey semi final in 2007, when a 5-2 triumph for the Catalans included Leo Messi scoring an almost carbon copy of Maradona’s legendary goals against England in 1986. Barring a minor miracle, this game has home win written all over it. Almeria had never played top flight football before 2007, and some would say it is only a matter of time before they are on their way back down again. Barça meanwhile have been there since the start, way back in 2008, and rarely does a season go by them without some kind of major silverware being won.

In 2007 FC Barcelona thumped a memorable eight goals past a hapless Osasuna, but despite the star-studded Barça squad, don’t expect a repeat performance of that. Like all teams from the Basque Country, Osasuna, from the famous bull-running city of Pamplona, are a plucky enough outfit and have occasionally managed to get something out of their visits to the Camp Nou. They spend most of the time struggling against relegation or trying to get back up to the top flight, although 2006 saw them equal their highest ever league finish of fourth.

Barça against Espanyol, derbies don’t come much more heated than this. Barça like to write Espanyol as an unwanted reminder of the Spanish influence in Catalonia, but Espanyol are fed up with being treated as ‘second class citizens’ and like nothing better than to get one over their detested rival. Barcelona like to consider themselves ‘more than a club’, while one of the Espanyol slogans in response in that ‘Catalonia is more than one club’. So, there is no love lost between these two sides, and over the years some classic encounters have been produced between these two.

It was not until the nineties that Deportivo, from the northwest region of Galicia, finally established themselves as a major force in Spanish football, but since then they have been regular campaigners, and even became the first league champions of the millennium. But despite those moments of glory, they will probably never quite match the grandeur of FC Barcelona.
